Microsoft set to unveil all-new hardware next month at gamescom

Microsoft had a surprisingly notable E3 showing this year. After it appeared as though it might not have much to show when it hit the stage, it proceeded to bombard us with 50 games including 18 exclusives and 15 world premieres. So yeah, things turned out alright. After all, we awarded the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer shown off during the Xbox presser one of our Game of Show awards this year.

Since then, we have seen some notable official price drops and even a pair of new Xbox One bundles as we continue through summer 2018, but it looks like the Xbox announcements and product unveils are just starting to heat up.

Gamescom in Cologne, Germany kicks off on August 21st and runs through the 25th. While clearly not quite as big as E3, it looks like Microsoft will have new gear along with a series of game content to show off at this year’s event. Today the company announced that it would be bringing a lineup of games from developers all over the world, a special episode of Inside Xbox (Tuesday, August 21, at 4:30 p.m. CEST/7:30 a.m. PDT) and “perhaps even a few surprises!”

One thing the company specifically pointed out was “all-new Xbox hardware and accessories.” Now before you get too excited, this is almost certainly not the next generation of Xbox. Recent reports suggested it will be 2020 before that happens. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Microsoft drop the first details on some new accessories. However, it unfortunately would also not be surprising to see a bunch of Xbox One X bundles and underwhelming new controller colors.

Some have suggested we might actually see the next generation Xbox Elite Controller. While hype surrounding the current gen model has certainly dwindled, it was received quite well by gamers and previous rumors suggest a new model is in the works. Leaked details pointed at Bluetooth support on Windows 10, USB-C connectivity, 3-stage Trigger Locks and an on-board control map button.

We are within a month or so of gamescom, so it won’t be long before we know for sure. But as we mentioned above, here’s to hoping these aren’t just another run of boring, random color PUBG bundles or orange Xbox game pads.

The Xbox booth will feature 25 games including “driving through stunning beautiful historic Britain in Forza Horizon 4”, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and the first-ever opportunity to go hands-on with State of Decay 2’s Daybreak Pack (releasing in September).
