The battle royale genre took off with PUBG a little while back and now Fortnite has taken the helm of what can only be described as the biggest gaming phenomena since Pokémon GO. While Fortnite has mostly stolen the thunder from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the popular Call of Duty franchise announced it was stepping into the space with a new mode for Black Ops 4 back in May. But there’s a smaller battle royale-style game known as Darwin Project that has also caught our attention.
The new COD game is set for release in October so Fortnite will have some serious competition on its hands come fall 2018, but there are loads of interesting indie titles that are stepping into the space as well. One such title is Darwin Project. It went free on PC via Steam a couple of months back and today the developers unveiled it would be available on Xbox One next month for absolutely nothing.
The game was originally available on Xbox via Game Preview with a $15 price tag. But it looks like starting early next month it will be free-to-play and will be getting a nice update along with it.
The multiplayer battle royale title adds a bit of a survival twist to the usual formula. There is loads of crafting, traps and more to help you survive the post-apocalyptic Canadian wilderness. Scavenger Studios has essentially set the game in a sort of Hunger Games-like setting, but with an impending ice age and some interesting sci-fi cross-over elements. Eleven players are dropped into the harsh Canadian Rockies with nothing but an axe and a bow. Last man standing wins.
The fact that the game has systematically gone free-to-play since early release generally isn’t a good sign. But considering how crowded the battle royale scene is getting and with Fortnite being available just about everywhere for almost free, Scavenger might not have any other choice.
You can jump in to Darwin Project matches for free starting on July 4th. Anyone who has already purchased the game will have something referred to as the Founder’s Pack made available to them on the 3rd. But if that’s not enough, it sounds like refunds are being handed out by Xbox support. More details right here on that.
Speaking of games, this year’s E3 was an interesting one. It was just trailer after trailer of new games, despite the fact Sony was promoting its big event as one that would focus on a few key titles. And it did, but there was a lot more than that. Microsoft came out of nowhere with loads of footage and Nintendo gave as a lengthy look at the new Smash Bros Ultimate.
