RED is a well-known brand when it comes to high-end cameras. Well, it’s well-known if you’re into cameras, that is. Recently, RED released a new camera and sensor combo, the EPIC-W with a GEMINI 5K sensor. This sensor is designed to have dual-sensitivity for its ISO so it can capture both low-light and well-lit environments for crispy photos. Read below for more info.
RED is probably most well-known for its insanely high-end cameras that shoot up to 8K resolution. Obviously, no one can really view 8K right now, but the EPIC-W with the GEMINI 5K sensor isn’t designed for that. This camera is designed for capturing fantastic low-light images.
One area that it’s expected to be used in is outer space photography. Due to its wonderful sensor, the EPIC-W should be able to capture insanely beautiful pictures from outer space and relay them back to us Earthlings.
This new camera from RED isn’t cheap, though. With a regular price of $24,500, you’re looking at the price of some new cars. If you want the 8K Helium Super 35mm sensor, you’ll have to shell out $29,500, though neither of these cameras include any lenses.
There are two modes on this new camera, standard mode, and low-light mode. When in low-light mode, you’ll get an image that when exposed at 3200 ISO will basically the same clarity as an image exposed at 800 ISO in its standard mode.
This will really help when capturing images at night, or from outer space. In the video above, RED says that you won’t want to use low-light mode unless you really need it. You’re going to blow out the highlights and even some mid-tones if you use this mode during the day unless of course, you’re using ND filters to act as sunglasses for your camera.
RED is always changing the game when it comes to camera technology, pushing innovation to its furthest limits. I would love to one day be able to use RED’s cameras, though the price generally makes average consumers shy away.
If you’re always working on big video projects, this could be a key feature you need in your camera. Having the ability to capture at higher ISO without introducing tons of noise could be the clutch thing that sells the EPIC-W with the GEMINI 5K sensor.
At a starting price of $24,500, you can purchase RED’s latest release from its website starting today. As always, RED cameras need to be fully outfitted with other gear, like power, handles, recording devices, and more. The total can add up quickly, but there’s a reason most major motion pictures are shot on RED cameras, and that’s simply because they’re some of the best sensors on the market.
