Best Console Game Releases for February: Shadow of the Colossus, Secret of Mana, more

Last month we saw the much-anticipated Monster Hunter: World release alongside the Arcade version of Street Fighter V. This month’s releases are headlined by the amazing visuals found in the new HDR-friendly Shadow of the Colossus remake, Owlboy comes to console and Secret of Mana makes a glorious return to modern hardware…

Shadow of the Colossus PS4 – Feb 6th

Shadow of the Colossus released back in 2005 for PlayStation 2. Since then, the game has grown to cult classic status and is widely regarded as one of the most interesting and unique experiences of its era. After being remade for PS3 some years ago, a complete HD remake of the game was announced for PlayStation 4 and it is finally here. You can expect full HDR support along with 4K rendering on the PlayStation 4 Pro. Needless to say, Wander and the great colossi have never looked this amazing.

While it might not be up to spec for hardcore purists of the original, it’s hard to imagine anyone not being interested in jumping back into Fumito Ueda’s incredible fantasy world.

Shadow of the Colossus $40

Owlboy Switch/PS4/Xbox One – Feb 13

Described as a “love letter to pixel art for a new audience”, Owlboy is a gorgeous, open-world adventure game. It combines flight and traditional platforming areas as well as a long list of abilities in the form of interesting character buddies. You can also expect dungeon-style gameplay, boss battles and a very interesting story:

Explore a vibrantly crafted pixel world in this flying adventure platformer. Being a mute, Otus struggles living up to the expectations of owl-hood. Things spiral from bad to worse with the sudden appearance of sky pirates. What follows is a journey through monster infested ruins, with unexpected encounters, and burdens no-one should have to bear.

Owlboy $25

Secret of Mana PC/PS4/Vita – Feb 15th

Secret of Mana touches close to home for me personally. It was my favorite role-playing game growing up and to see it completely remade for modern-day consoles is a thing of beauty. Again, some purists might not love the revamped art style here but, as far as I’m concerned, it looks fantastic. It doesn’t appear as though Square Enix has fixed some of the issues that arguably plagued the original launch, but maybe we should just feel lucky to be getting this one at all.

Take on the role of Randi, a young boy tasked with reviving the magical power of Mana. The battle for Mana includes many tumultuous encounters along the way; armed with the Mana Sword and joined by his two companions Primm and Popoi, Randi leads the epic quest to battle the treacherous empire as it tries to gain control of Mana.

Secret of Mana $40

Some honorable mentions releasing this month go to EA’s UFC 3 which dropped on the 2nd, Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 for Switch on the 16th, and lastly, Metal Gear Survive on PS4, Xbox One and PC on the 20th.
