Keeping all of your streaming subscriptions and all the boxes that come along with them organized is still a bit of a chore. Despite recent efforts from most of the major players in the space, anyone invested in multiple services and set-top boxes still has to deal with a mess of cables and input switching. While Apple’s TV app is certainly headed in the right direction, it doesn’t really help much for those with multiple streaming boxes sitting atop the mantle.
Earlier this year we had a chance to take a quick look at what the 4K Caavo set-top box had to offer and now the company is ready for you to bring its all-in-one entertainment system home…
Since we last heard from Caavo, the company has managed to garner millions in funding in order to push the first generation box to market and continue development on more affordable options down the line.
As a quick reminder, Caavo is essentially made up of two units: a voice-controlled remote and what basically amounts to an intelligent HDMI/USB hub for your streaming boxes.
The idea here is that you can search for a particular show or movie using voice commands and the Caavo system will then automatically choose the appropriate service and streaming box for you, no input switching necessary. While you can just as easily set defaults so certain services will play via particular set-top boxes, Caavo can just as well use its built-in “machine vision” or “Caavo vision” to make intelligent choices for you.
The Caavo unit carries eight HDMI inputs, a pair of USB ports and a single HDMI output to your display. So it can easily support your Apple TV, Roku boxes, gaming consoles, a DVR, and even USB-powered devices like a Chromecast.
The box supports 4K content, but can not handle HDR. The company claims that technology is just not feasible yet on an eight-input hub. That might make the $400 price tag a little bit harder to swallow for some, but the overall convenience here is undeniable.
The company says its solution to the universal remote issue is ready for store shelves come February 14th, 2018. The 4K Caavo entertainment system will be in limited quantity with only 5,000 units being manufactured at the jump, a number the company is confident will sell out almost immediately. It has also hinted at a more affordable box, possibly with fewer inputs, as a possibility in the near-future.
