Ring has burst on to the scene in recent years with its ever-expanding lineup of doorbells, security cameras, and more. And while it’s enjoyed being first to market in a number of ways, competition continues to flare up across the industry. The latest of which comes from Blink, which has announced a new battery-powered doorbell with full video functionality. Best of all, and perhaps most worrisome for Ring, its internal batteries last up to two full years on a single charge.
Blink is hardly new to the game, already offering a range of cameras and other smart home accessories. Its new Video Doorbell has a very attractive price, starting at $99 for those that already own a Blink Sync Module. Otherwise, you’ll need to pony up $129 to get started. For comparison, Ring charges upwards of $250 for its own version, so Blink is already ahead in the pricing department.
So what can you expect? Blink promises HD video feeds, although we don’t know if it’s 1080p or not, along with two-way audio, and motion detection. There’s also support for Night vision when needed. As expected, Blink will offer support for its smartphone app that will allow for live streaming. All of that comes courtesy of two AA batteries that offer up to two-years of battery life. That’s mighty impressive.
Given that Nest recently unveiled its own Hello doorbell that retails for $229 and up, Blink has done a nice job here with pricing. Where this upcoming release really has a chance to shine is with the promise of “free cloud storage.” Now, we don’t know exactly the timespan on how long you’ll be able to dial-up footage, but hey, free is better than nothing. Unlimited DVR functionality is likely out of the question, but users can likely expect 2-3 days worth.
The Blink Video Doorbell will be officially unveiled at CES 2018 and is slated to go on sale shortly after.

The Blink Video Doorbell provides customers with HD video alerts, motion-detection, live streaming video with 2-way audio, infrared night vision, weatherproofing and more at an incredible price. While other companies try to wow early-adopters with tech and unnecessary features, at Blink we are disrupting the smart home industry through a zealous focus on simple products that provide huge value at an unmatchable price, said Peter Besen, CEO of Blink. We’ve taken our award-winning experience from our security cameras and applied it to the doorbell. We feel this has resulted in the absolute easiest to install, full-featured video doorbell on the market today. Combined with our existing wire-free cameras, consumers will have peace of mind that their entire home is safe when they are away.
The Blink Video Doorbell and a companion battery-powered Blink Doorbell Chime will be on display at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, where Blink has been named a CES 2018 Innovation Awards Honoree for the third consecutive year. The brand won recognition for the video doorbell within the Smart Home category, which was chosen by an esteemed panel of judges that includes industry designers, engineers and media.
Existing Blink customers will be able to purchase the video doorbell alone for $99 or new customers can purchase a stand-alone system consisting of a Blink Video Doorbell and Blink Sync Module for $129. The companion Blink Doorbell Chime pricing will be announced at CES.
