Barnes & Noble rolls out the NOOK GlowLight 3, its newest e-reader with Night Mode

You probably haven’t heard about the NOOK when talking about e-readers for sometime now. Well, I’m here to tell you they actually still exist and Barnes & Noble has just announced the newest GlowLight 3 to its lineup of affordable e-readers with a few new features.

One of the impressive new aspects is something they call “enhance front light technology.” This lets the user automatically or manually shift from a cool white light during the day to a warmer orange tone suitable for bed time reading at night like TrueTone with Apple devices. With the automatic setting, it matches the sun’s natural progression throughout the day so it gradually changes the color of the screen for you.

It now has a 6-inch LCD touchscreen display and has these physical dimensions: 6.93 x 5.0 x 0.38-inch. The 300 dpi screen also has a glare-resistant and fingerprint-avoiding coating perfect for better quality viewing. Other comfort features include amazingly crisp text and no full-page flashing while reading. It even has physical page-turn buttons that Barnes & Noble hope readers will appreciate.

With the tablet comes 8GB of storage (enough to hold thousands of titles) and you can easily download eBooks and magazines with the available Wi-Fi connection. The battery can last for up to 50 days of reading and it recharges quickly with a micro-USB cable. It also has a battery save mode and wireless shutoff options as well. To keep costs down and take a step in a different direction, Barnes & Noble removed the aluminum backing that was available in the GlowLight 2 and all the waterproofing features completely.

The NOOK GlowLight 3 is available for pre-order now online at Barnes & Noble and will be available in its stores starting November 8 for $119.99. It’s a nice attempt by Barnes & Noble to stay competitive with the Kindle Paperwhite and other leading e-readers out there, but it may be too little and too late in the game. The full PR follows as well as detailed specs of the new device.

“We’re so excited to launch this new NOOK for the holiday season because it’s designed with the Barnes & Noble reader in mind. The First NOOK to Feature Night Mode Control

NOOK GlowLight 3 has enhanced front light technology that makes it the perfect eReader from day-to-night. The lighting technology offers two ways to activate the color change on screen: manually and automatically. The automatic setting mimics the sun’s natural progression throughout the day, gradually changing the color on the screen from a cool white during the day to a warmer orange tone – perfect for bedtime reading. Readers will notice and appreciate the reduced amounts of blue light emitted by the LED used in the front light when reading at night.

Comfortable Soft Touch Design and Additional Features

The new soft touch finishes on the NOOK GlowLight 3 offer a comfortable paper-like experience that’s easy to grip and hold for long periods of time, while page turning buttons featured on both sides of the device accommodate left- and right-handed customers. Readers will enjoy being able to jump from chapter to chapter with a few clicks or a fast flip. Customizing the screen display to fit any reading style is made easy by adjusting the font size. Whether large or small, the NOOK GlowLight 3 has the perfect-sized text, enabling readers to breeze through their favorite books.

Our Highest Resolution E-Ink Display

Reading in dim light, total darkness, or outdoors in the bright sun is more immersive than ever on the NOOK GlowLight 3. Crisp text, no full-page flashing while reading, a no-glare screen, and screen warmth control features make this NOOK the most comfortable eReader to date.
