Phorus intros wireless multi-room Sonos One competitor w/ Alexa

$250

The Phorus DTS whole home audio solution is getting a substantial upgrade today. The company’s current lineup of speakers is designed to rival that of some pretty weighty competition, including the likes of Sonos and even the Amazon Tap. So the announcement of a larger Alexa voice service-compatible unit is certainly a welcomed addition to the lineup.

The already available Phorus PS5 speaker is designed after the more traditional horizontal portable Bluetooth speaker silhouette. But with the new PS10 DTS Play-Fi enabled wireless speaker, Phorus is clearly targeting Amazon’s flagship, personal-assistant laden listening device.

First let’s us get some of the specs out of the way. The PS10 packs a 30-watt amplifier with DTS sound processing and two 65mm Neodymium transducers backed by a pair of 4-inch bass drivers. You’ll also find four buttons mounted on top that can be customized to a myriad of music services and more.

As for physical connectivity, you will find a classic 3.5mm auxiliary input along with a line-level “audiophile grade” output, essentially allowing you to wirelessly stream audio to existing Hi-Fi systems without Bluetooth. According to Phorus, the PS10 is the very first Alexa-compatible product out there to include support for high resolution 24-bit/192kHz content. That’s significantly more than double the volume and frequency resolution of a typical MP3, for reference.

The Phorus PS10 supports playback through Airplay, and Spotify Connect, includes a 3.5mm input for connecting any analog source, and a line-level audiophile grade output for connections to high-performance audio components. Using DTS Play-Fi, the 3.5mm input can be streamed wirelessly to DTS Play-Fi enabled products in other rooms of the home.

That leads us to the whole home audio portion of the system. Not only does the PS10 speak the same language as the smaller PS5 and the Phorus hub to create a complete home audio experience, but it also features DTS Play-Fi. This allows the system (and the individual products within) to connect with a massive list of DTS Play-Fi-compatible products (over 200 different products/brands).

Some of those DTS-friendly brands include DISH TV, Integra, Klipsch, MartinLogan, McIntosh, Onkyo, Pioneer, Polk Audio, THIEL Audio and Wren Sound, just to name a few.

Phorus is continually pushing the boundaries of the DTS Play-Fi ecosystem with new innovative products as demonstrated by the Phorus PS10 smart speaker, the first wireless multi-room speaker to ship with Amazon Alexa Voice Service built-in…

The new Chorus PS10 Play-Fi Alexa-enabled wireless speaker is available now starting at $249.99 shipped. That’s a pretty steep price tag considering the foothold Sonos is creating with the new Alexa-enabled One. Not to mention the $130 price tag an Amazon Tap carries. But the DTS Play-Fi is certainly interesting and it is nice to see Phorus expand its system for those already invested in it.
