Super Nintendo Classic Edition Console reportedly on the way!

All your wildest Nintendo dreams are about to come true. Maybe. If a Eurogamer report that hit this morning is true, Nintendo is already hard at work on the next mini console. And better yet, it looks like it will be a SNES Classic! Reports indicate the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System is well into development and scheduled to hit store shelves later this year!

To much surprise Nintendo announced recently that it would cease production on the NES Classic Mini. The console was original planned to be a sort of gimmicky product for the 2016 holiday season, and was not expected to fly off store shelves the way it did. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one to giveaway as part of the 9to5Rewards program, but if you haven’t gotten one yet, your chances are getting thinner by the minute. The last few shipments carried over into the beginning of this year, but are almost impossible to come by at this point outside of eBay for exorbitant prices.

While the nostalgia surrounding the original NES is unparalleled, it seems that for many, including myself, the SNES era is even more exciting. Its lineup of games includes some of the most iconic experiences and characters of all-time whether its JRPGs like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and the early Final Fantasy titles or absolute classics like Super Metriod, Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart. While some of these franchises first appeared on the NES, it is the SNES era that many of us remember most.

Unfortunately, at this point it looks as though Nintendo will be sticking with a similar format for the SNES mini with a preinstalled game library. You likely won’t be able to add more after the fact, based on the light details in today’s report. Unless you’re a genius hacker guy that is. Or just play these games on a Raspberry Pi console with just about no limitations.

Suffice to say any of these details could change at any point as the sources are thin at best, but Eurogamer has a good track record with these kinds of things, especially when it comes to Nintendo. Many suggested the reason Nintendo was discontinuing the NES Classic could be due to another iteration coming down the pipeline anyway and a little SNES definitely fits the bill. So while we are excited, the upcoming console certainly doesn’t come as much surprise. Let’s just hope Nintendo makes a million of them and doesn’t try to create some kind of fake scarcity like it may or may not have done the first time around.
