Every new parent gets to learn about the midnight car drive to get your infant back to bed trick. What if there was a way to bring the soothing effect of a car ride back to the baby’s room so you would never have to leave the house in the first place? The Max Motor Dreams is a crib developed by Ford that simulates the gentle hum and vibrations of a moving car, without the need for a potentially dangerous late night drive.
It’s expected that new parents lose the equivalent of 44 days of sleep in the first year of their child’s life alone. A night-time drive can keep a baby quiet, and keep you in bed for a bit longer, but still requires you to be awake at the wheel. Ford has created a prototype that can simulate the motion, engine noise, and even the street lighting of those late-night trips. The crib looks much like a normal baby bed, but thanks to a companion smartphone app, it’s capable of much more.
Parents can turn on Max Motor Dreams with a smartphone app. It allows you to record the comforting movement, lights and sounds of a car journey and then enables the crib to play it all back on demand. That means the familiar feel of a trip around the neighborhood will be what your baby experiences here rather than a generic simulation.
There’s a small speaker underneath the cot that provides the muffled sound of an engine. Motors underneath the cot produce gentle movement, simulating a car trip. There’s even a set of LED lights that provide the same warm glow that street lights do. It’s all in the hopes of getting the little one to sleep faster.

After many years of talking to mums and dads, we know that parents of newborns are often desperate for just one good night’s sleep,” said Alejandro López Bravo, the cot’s designer. “But while a quick drive in the family car can work wonders in getting baby off to sleep, the poor old parents still have to be awake and alert at the wheel.
Unfortunately, the crib is a just a prototype that you won’t be able to purchase yet, but Ford is considering bringing it to stores sooner rather than later due to high demand.
