Mafia 3 publisher 2K Games is now offering players a chance to experience the criminal underground of late 1960’s New Bordeaux for free. Don’t to get too excited, the game isn’t going free-to-play, but you can try out the first act for nothing…
Mafia 3 is a brand new story for the franchise, but long time fans of the series will get a few nods to past games including characters and several story references. It is set in the turbulent late 60’s and follows the story of returning Vietnam War vet Lincoln Clay through his dealings with local crime syndicates. The game takes place in developer Hanger 13’s fictional version of New Orleans: New Bordeaux. Mafia 3 features an intersting social mechanic whereby you will have to make deals with other crime families in order to keep them on your good side. While the system isn’t perfect, it adds some variation to each player’s experience and the open-world formula as a whole.
It released in October of last year during the busy game release season as the fastest selling 2K game of all-time. The open-world crime drama received mix reviews despite just about every critic praising its story, characters and treatment of the racially-charged era the game focuses on. Most of the set backs surrounded some bugs and repetitive gameplay, but anyone who loves open-world games will understand that sometimes these things come along with the territory.

Nonetheless, 2K is clearly looking to bolster interest in the game some 5 months after release. While it may seem a little bit late at this point, giving everyone a chance to experience the excellent first few hours and intersting setting for free sounds like a win to me.
The free demo is also coming alongside the first paid DLC for the main game known as “Faster, Baby”. This is a completely new story section of the game where Lincoln and a new character Roxy Laveau work to take down a corrupt sheriff. It is set in a new area known as Sinclair Parish which is described as a “small rural township in the countryside”, somewhere near the Bayou. It sounds like there is a lot of driving elements to the add-on but we are also getting some new hardware in the way of proximity mines, a silenced SMG and more. Here’s a look at the release trailer:

Mafia 3’s first act is now available for download as a free demo on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. All of your progress in the demo will carry over to the full game if you choose to purchase it after the fact.
It is currently within $5 or so of its all-time low on from around $27 Prime shipped.
