Retro gaming has seen an impressive resurgence in 2016. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your favorite games of yesteryear, perhaps none more notable than the recently-released NES Classic. However, Nintendo’s official throwback option has a number of limitations. A small-ish library of just 30 titles and a three-foot controller cable are potential drawbacks. This renewed interested in old school games has spawned a few recent projects, including the RetroEngine Sigma that supports 28 different gaming systems (including NES).
At its core, the Sigma is an emulator that can handle games from Nintendo, GameBoy, PlayStation 1, Atari and others. The plan at this time is to ship with 15 titles at launch but there aren’t likely to be any big names included here to avoid any legal risks. Of course, users will be able to run most games from these consoles with ROM files (at your own risk). The console itself is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor that is capable of spitting out 4K resolutions. It has two USB ports that can be paired with popular third-party controllers on the market today. With a month left on Indiegogo, this project has raised over $150,000. Currently, a pledge of $59 will deliver a unit in May.
RetroEngine Sigma is as simple as plug-and-play and requires no expertise or experience to set up. The system comes with several pre-installed games that work out of the box. Additionally, via an easy smartphone guided setup procedure, gamers gain the ability to run a majority of retro video games released on such classic systems as Atari VCS 2600, Sega Genesis, NES and many more. It is also a living room computer and powerful media-center. Retro gaming simplified!
