Grado Labs out of Brooklyn, NY recently introduced a new pair of flagship wooden headphones, the GS2000e. True to form, these fresh high-end cans marry a classic design with iconic craftsmanship. This pair bumps the previously released GS1000e at the top of the company’s Statement Series. Head below for more and a gallery of images.
Grado regularly uses mahogany wood as its primary source for building out the chamber. In a change of pace, John Sr. has elected to combine the old standby with Maple in the first dual-material release out of its Brooklyn townhouse-turned-factory.
This is the second time that Grado has elected to bring in alternative wood, the first being its limited edition run of locally-sourced Heritage Series.
We caught up with Jonathan, VP of Marketing and John’s son for more on the new release:
We’ve found the perfect marriage of mahogany and maple in our GS2000e. The GS2000e combines them in the same manner that luthiers have done for centuries, and for the same reason: resonance. Different types of wood sing with their own personalities. The hand-crafted mahogany and maple merged enclosures are a realization from the experience that only Grado Labs knows from working with wood. This technique is used by the finest musical instrument manufacturers from the past and the present.
The use of Maple gives the energy of the sound of music to be fully transmitted, then the Mahogany allows it to open up and reveal the true harmonic structure as well as the space that the artist intended. Every component in the GS2000e is considered carefully by the family: the new purpose built 50 mm drivers, the 12 conductor ultra high purity copper cable and ear cushions, and more, all work together for an engaging musical experience.
On the technical side, Grado is using new 50mm drivers and high purity copper cabling. Of course, each pair is made by hand in the same Brooklyn location that has been used for years. Learn more about Grado and its story in our Small States feature.
The new Grado GS2000e is available today for purchase direct from the manufacturer for $1,395.
