We love a good Nintendo throwback around here, especially if it has anything to do with Game Boy. We have have seen life size Raspberry Pi hacks, custom-made 3D Printed emulators and even some sweet magnets that will make any fridge look like Nintendo’s beloved handheld. And now, two of my personal favorite things, music and gaming, are coming together for one epic new hybrid Game Boy device:
Guitar Boy, is well, just what it sounds like. Creative electronics wiz, Fibbef, has built a custom made Game Boy emulator into the base of a working electric guitar. As you can see in the video above, the body of the instrument is designed to look just like it should with a working D-Pad, face buttons and a a 5-inch LCD display.
The console emulation itself uses a Raspberry Pi B+ (RetroPie version 2.3) and the A and B buttons double up as volume/tone controls for the guitar’s output, as well as controls for the games themselves. Along with a basic power switch for the console, another toggle along the side of the body flips between the guitar’s pickup and the audio from the game your playing. The Raspberry Pi is powered with a 2,200 mAh battery and the entire body is covered in a plexiglass pick guard.
Unfortunately, Fibbef created this for the BitFix Gaming 2015 Game Boy Classic build-off , so there is no way for me to buy one.
