With most Apple Watch orders finally being fulfilled, the accessories market for the new timepiece is beginning to take shape. We have already reviewed a handful of options for keeping Apple’s latest device charged and displayed. While these products offer unique solutions to power management, there is still room for developing this product category.
DODOcase, purveyors of handcrafted goods in San Francisco, is leaning on its talents to create a dock for Apple Watch and iPhone whether your on the road or at home. We’ve spent a few weeks with the Dual Charging Dock Organizer, head below for our full review and details on how you could win one for yourself.
The Dual Charging Dock Organizer follows the familiar design that we’ve become accustomed to from DODOcase. Utilizing the classic book bound cover design, it looks like something that belongs in your library when it first arrives. The outside is wrapped in blue fabric and the attention to detail is evident right away. Inside you’ll find a carved piece of birch wood that has been layered to create a paper-like effect. It has a hole that has been milled in the front half for the Apple Watch charging puck and an area that has been routed out for an iPhone to rest.
DODOcase has engineered a clever design that integrates the cables into the birch wood. By carving out what would have been unused space on the bottom of the wood, it maximizes storage for cables or small headphones (think Apple EarPods). It also has built-in magnets that keep the wood in place so it doesn’t move with every use. Two small steel pegs in the corners have just enough space to wrap a Lightning cable around to help control the wires.
While everything has a place, it can be slightly difficult to get every cable aligned exactly as needed, you won’t want to remove it and go through the process again. The charging puck for the Apple Watch needs to be slightly elevated out of the hole to ensure that it can magnetize for charging. I appreciated the effort made to supply a home for both devices, if there was anything that I would have done differently, it would be that your phone must lay in landscape orientation while plugged in. It can sit up but is unable to be charged if that’s the case. Of course, with the arrival of watchOS 2, this stand will not support night mode and the alarm clock function because the watch itself needs to set up on its side.
There was clearly a lot of thought put into the Dual Charging Dock Organizer. It is refreshing when a company mixes a simple yet well executed design to deliver a product that you didn’t know you needed until you’ve used it. At $79.95, the price tag falls in line with DODOcase’s other offerings. If you’re after a handcrafted, made in America product that looks a little different than the competition, this charging solution deserves a look.
