Canon’s latest version of its flagship Digital SLR camera is now available and starts shipping today. Set to take over for the EOS 7D, the new EOS 7D Mark II has received positive early reviews for its updated auto-focus system, burst capture functionality, durable magnesium alloy body and integrated GPS.
Head below to find out if Canon’s new flagship APS-C DSLR is worthy of a spot in your camera bag…
The Mark II sports a APS-C sized 20.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor with dual pixel CMOS AF that enables users to shoot full 1080p HD video like a camcorder. Dual DIGIC 6 image processors allow the new EOS 7D to capture “up to 1090 JPEG, 31 RAW, and 19 RAW + JPEG shots in a single burst.” Its speedy reaction time makes the camera quite suitable for fast paced sports photography or something of that nature.
Optimized for low-light shooting, the EOS 7D Mark II’s sensor captures images at up to ISO 16000 (expandable to H1: 25600, H2: 51200) with remarkably low noise, thanks to its improved, higher sensitivity design.
Along with continuous high speed shooting up to 10fps, it has a much better autofocus system this time around as well. The new Mark II has 65-point “Live-View” autofocus, which is greatly improved over the previous model’s 19-point system and generally provides much faster and higher quality results:
An EOS first, the EOS 7D Mark II features 65 all cross-type AF points* for high precision AF at remarkable speed. Cross-type AF points ensure stable AF that is not influenced by the subject’s shape or color. On the EOS 7D Mark II, the AF points are spread over a wide area of the frame, enabling faster AF, wherever the subject lies.
The new Mark II has a 3-inch LCD screen, dual CF and SD card slots, USB 3.0 connectivity and automatic location tagging with built-in GPS. One thing to mention here is that Canon did not include built-in WiFi/NFC the way Sony’s somewhat comparable Alpha 77 II DSLR does. More details below.
The new Canon EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) goes for $1,799, and supports the wide range of EF/EF-S lenses and EOS accessories already available. Keep in mind, you can find discounts on lenses and cameras at Canon’s official refurb store, which offers a one year warranty and generally come in ‘like new’ condition.
