The new littleBits WiFi enabled cloudBit makes anything an internet connected smart device

Littlebits Electronics makes a large line of magnetic electronics modules (or Bits) that can be used to create a number of different gadgets and devices without the need to know how to code or to pull out a soldering iron. While there a number of different bundles that can be purchased, the Bits range from switches, light dimmers, sensors, small motors, and even Korg made a littleBits DIY synthesizer kit.

Until now, the prototyping and hobbyist platform didn’t allow for creations that were connected to the internet, so littleBits has decided to introduce the new cloudBit module.

The new Bit allows for smart WiFi enabled creations like basic versions of a Nest thermostat, or even a Sonos music system. You can see a brief video of a DIY smart thermostat project below. While the platform was never designed to compete with products like this, LittleBits sees it as a powerful way for creators to prototype ideas and as an interesting and fun electronics toy for hobbyists.

The new cloudBit is priced at $59 on its own for those who already have a littleBits set-up. There is also a $99 Starter Bundle which comes with the cloudBit, 5 other popular modules as well as wall power and mounting boards. LittleBits has provided some videos for starter projects to build with the kit as well including “an SMS doorbell, internet-connected lamp and many more.” For more advanced users there is a cloud API and an optional Arduino Bit available as well.
