Apple took down the Apple Store for 6 hours last night and introduced an entry level iMac for $1099. What do you ‘get’ for $1099? Apple halved the hard drive to a paltry 500GB and speed of the processor to 1.4GHz. That’s a little uninspiring to say the least.
Not to worry, we’ve got a better entry level offer for you. MacMall will sell you a new 2.7GHz iMac from last year with a 1TB hard drive for $1069. A $70 mail in rebate brings it below $1000 with Tax in only a few states. Even without the rebate, it is a better offer: it also has much better graphics, the same Thunderbolt ports, wireless keyboard and mouse and is freely upgradable to the latest Mavericks/Yosemite OS. One downside is the wireless which is 802.11N instead of 802.11AC in the newer one.
Apple also looks to have dropped the prices on its refurbished Airport Time Capsules. $149 now buys you a 2TB Model which is pretty much a no brainer if the size and age aren’t a problem for you. Apple offers the same 1 year warranty on its refurbished items that it does on its new products so buy with some confidence.
