TiVo unleashes the new 4K-ready Bolt+ DVR with six tuners and a massive 3TB hard drive

Nearly a year ago, TiVo announced the Bolt DVR with 4K compatibility and a sleek new design. However, that release left many power users in the dark because of limited tuners and storage in comparison to past models. TiVo has stepped up today with the new Bolt+ that includes six tuners and a massive 3TB hard drive for $499 plus a service fee. It even made a return to the black colorway while still maintaining its attractive curved design.

The newest TiVo will replace the Roamio Pro with a mix of specs between the original Bolt and today’s announcement. Features include 4K, Netflix, YouTube and other streaming services plus SkipMode returns from the smaller model. Upgrades from the previous generation Pro include 802.11ac Wi-Fi and gigabit ethernet. TiVo has also included a new faster processor with three times as much internal RAM.

The Bolt+ will unfortunately not be able to handle OTA content like the Roamio. However, it does have six tuners which pairs nicely with the large 3TB hard drive. That’s good for around 450 hours of HD content (or less in 4K). Users are likely to fill that up quickly if maximizing the full potential of the Bolt+. One area where today’s model takes a step back is its capacity for simultaneous streams. The Roamio Pro could pump out four at a time while the upgraded Bolt can only handle half as many.

Looking at comparative pricing, the Bolt+ sits at the top of the TiVo food chain. At $499, you’ll be paying upwards of $200+ over its little siblings. That’s before any subscriptions are even considered. As you know, TiVo will charge you $15 per month or $150 annually to leverage the full power of this device. An all-in subscription runs an additional $549 (wow). It will be available via Amazon on September 15th, as well as direct from TiVo.

If you’re a TiVo power user, today’s likely the announcement that you’ve been waiting for. The price point is certainly difficult to swallow, even more so when subscription fees and a lack of OTA capabilities are considered. TiVo’s smaller Bolt continues to be an attractive option in the meantime.
