Super Nintendo gets a taste of modern day gaming thanks to the release of a new Bluetooth receiver

Virtual reality may be all the rage right now in video games, but there’s still a ton of love for 2D classics. Emulators and Nintendo’s Virtual Console do a good job of replicating the retro gaming experience. However, at the end of the day, it’s just not the same.

Luckily, 8bitdo and Analogue have once again teamed up to help bridge the gap between modern and old school gaming. This time the tandem has set its sights on one of our favorite consoles from the 90’s: Super Nintendo. Now instead of being tethered to the SNES with its short controller cord, you can grab the latest Retro Receiver and go wireless.

After releasing the Retro Receiver for NES earlier this year, 8bitdo and Analogue have thankfully answered our prayers for a SNES version.

The small dongle adds Bluetooth connectivity to you Super Nintendo, Super Famicom and other aftermarket systems with an SNES/SFC-style controller port. This allows you to sync a wireless controller with the 25 year old 16-bit video game system. Retro Receiver works with any 8bitdo controller or arcade stick and controllers from modern consoles like Wii U and PlayStation 4. 8bitdo controllers also work with Mac, PC, and iOS devices so you should be able to get a lot of mileage out of them.

We’ve come to take wireless controllers for granted these days, but being able to kick back while playing Donkey Kong Country and not have to worry about someone tripping over a controller wire sounds like a sweet upgrade to me. It’s also nice to have the option to use a different style controller in case you’re looking for a little more comfort or improved performance.

Retro Receiver for SNES is currently available from Play-Asia for $24.95 and is expected to ship next month. Looking to go even further back in gaming history? The NES version can be bought right on Amazon for around the same price.
