Full disclosure, I’m not really into camping. Perhaps, you can tell. The whole idea of sleeping on the ground has never struck me as a worthwhile weekend activity. My whole attitude might have just changed. Scout Equipment, makers of beautiful camping gear, has just come out with one of the coolest kitchens-in-a-box we’ve ever seen. Even better than that one from Rolls Royce.
This outdoor culinary studio is a dream for campers, aspiring chefs and everyone in between. A gas grill, refrigerator, sink and more all fold up into a tidy storage area in the back of your SUV. Bad news? It’s gonna cost you…
Scout really outdid itself here with its Overland Kitchen. This isn’t a gimmick but rather a full on outdoor cooking station that provides everything needed for a great dinner away from home. Just imagine rolling out to the beach or your tailgate with this thing. Instant eye-catcher. It literally has everything and the kitchen sink. The materials are top-notch, designed to “mix the luxuries of a modern kitchen with the great outdoors.”
At its core, the Overland is a multi-piece system that sits in the back of your SUV or truck. Each section then extends out to provide different working areas and appliances. Scout says that you’ll be up and running in “seconds”. Setup is allegedly that easy.
There are four main storage areas within the larger box. It starts with a refrigerator that is standard dorm room size and plugs into your car to stay cool. On the lower left hand corner is the expandable countertop that includes a sink, stovetop and prep area. Two drawers and a plate/utensil holder round out the space.
Personally, my favorite part is the cooking area. It has a multi-tiered pull out design that reminds of those tiny Russian dolls you see around the holidays. Each section pops out from the one before it and is divided off by the front of the cabinet. The collapsible stove has its own area and is powered by camping propane tanks that you’d find most anywhere online. In total, it weighs just over 100-pounds before any food is placed in the kit. The outside is constructed from aluminum with birch plywood lining the interior.
Each kitchen is made-to-order by Scout directly and prices vary depending on which options you choose. You’ll want to plan on spending at least $5,000 to get started. A pretty penny, I know. But it’s a luxury item that certainly won’t disappoint. I guess at that price point I’m still not really into camping.
