With commuter bicycles and mid-century modern design each making a stirring comeback over the last few years, it’s no surprise that cues from the latter have leaked into the former. A new line of two-wheelers made in partnership between Ridley Bikes and famed Belgian architect Pierre Lallemand are coming to an afternoon ride near year. With European flair and beautiful materials, this is perhaps the most stunning bike we’ve ever seen.
We’ll start with the design itself. The Opus bicycle from ECCE looks like something out of the Jetson’s. The entire thing is support by one swooping piece of material that stretches from the rear tire forward to the front and back to the seat. Think of an elongated Nike Swoosh. There are two materials to choose from, solid wood and carbon. Each of which offer different characteristics that play to different riders.
Each bicycle is sourced from a variety of different manufacturers that offer expertise in this area. Ridley is creating the frames and handles the development of the fork/suspension system. Shimano, a well established brand in this space, supplies the chains. A company by the name of Brooks out of England completes each bike with a handmade saddle and other leather components.
Opus Wood is made from a mixture of walnut, maple and pine. Each was chosen for its aesthetic and functional qualities. In the case of this natural material, it’s the rigidity that helps create a “smoother” ride. Switching to the carbon model, which opts for that space-look we referenced earlier, riders will notice a lighter frame and tougher build quality. This synthetic material has been used in bicycles for years thanks to its “weightlessness” sensation.
Each of these bikes are available for custom ordering today through ECCE Cycles. Because these are all one-offs, you’ll need to provide information on your styling and preferred materials before a final price can be calculated. One thing is for certain, you’d be the only one on the block with a ride like this.
