The Thin Ice wearable cools your body in hopes of burning an additional 1,000 calories per day

Weight loss is a tricky proposition and there is no shortage of options available on the market to consider. Today, a new product was unveiled that bridges a wearable and smartphone connectivity to help you drop the pounds throughout the day. The Thin Ice System is the “world’s first” app-connected clothing line with eyes on burning 500-1,000 calories. Head below for more…

The setup is pretty straightforward but the technology is next-level. Users will strap-on the Thin Ice System vest and pair it with the iOS and Android app for all-day tracking. There are “thermoreceptors” throughout the vest that cool the body. In turn, your internal temperature works to stay warm and burns calories in the meantime. According to independent studies, users can burn up to 1,000 additional calories in a day.

As you’ll see in the video below, Thin Ice envisions this product as an all-day solution. Examples include using it during the day at work and while sleeping. It even has sensors to recognize when you’ve fallen into a deeper REM cycle to keep your body at a comfortable temperature.

Now, admittedly there is to be some skepticism to be taken with this product. The idea here is very intriguing but any time you are messing with your body’s core temperature, it’s a good idea to proceed with caution. Much like other popular fitness trackers, Thin Ice records your data throughout the day, compiles it in one place and shares it with other apps when needed.

Thin Ice has just launched a crowdfunding campaign in hopes of raising $25,000 to jump start this product. For $165, you can lock in a pre-order with expected fulfillment coming in December. As always, proceed with caution when backing a product in the early stages.

THIN ICE SYSTEM LAUNCHES 2.0 CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN FOR WORLD’S FIRST

APP-CONNECTED WEIGHT LOSS CLOTHING LINE

Battery-powered smart vest burns 500-1,000 calories a day by stimulating the body’s brown fat pathways

TORONTO—(May 10, 2016) Today the Thin Ice System, world’s first app-connected smart clothing line for weight loss, launched its second round of crowdfunding via a proprietary campaign on its website, www.thiniceweightloss.com. The campaign allows backers to pre-order the 2.0 version of the Thin Ice vest at a discounted price of $165.00, with fulfillment expected by December of 2016. Thin Ice works by strategically cooling thermoreceptors along the upper chest and back to stimulate the body’s brown fat pathways. Brown fat is clinically proven to help the body burn white fat (bad fat) to maintain constant temperature when exposed to cold. The vest’s cooling effect is achieved through battery-powered Peltier cooling chips integrated into the vest’s design, and a proprietary patent-pending heat dissipation system invented by Thin Ice. The app controls the temperature of the vest, tracks the estimated amount of calories burned, and includes “badges” that can be unlocked by reaching various health goals.

Based on peer-reviewed studies on brown fat stimulation through cooling, an estimated additional 500-1,000 calories a day can be burned by wearing the vest under clothing while doing passive activities such as desk work, driving, or sleeping.

Backers of the campaign will receive the complete Thin Ice System, which includes wearable cooling vest that integrates with a Bluetooth® app, available for iOS, Android and Windows, a digital meal plan, cookbook, and exercise routine, along with a Joule™ caffeine bracelet to further stimulate metabolism and also suppress appetite. For optimal results, it is recommended that users follow the complete regimen.

“As a former NCAA athlete and personal trainer, I have always been fascinated with the science of getting in shape and how I can help others do the same,” said Adam Paulin, founder of Thin Ice. “In light of recent discoveries about the properties of brown fat, creating a practical solution for people to hack their metabolisms and passively lose weight through cold temperatures—without needing to get in an ice bath—seemed like a no-brainer.”

The company previously completed a crowdfunding campaign for an earlier version of the vest in 2015 that finished at almost $600,000 USD; units supported by this funding round are currently in manufacturing and will be shipping to early backers in June. Upgrades to the 2.0 are based on further discoveries by the Thin Ice team in conjunction with a team of researchers and doctors at York University in Toronto and include innovative battery-life conservation mechanisms, body temperature tracking that can adjust the temperature of the vest to counteract changes in the user and environment, replaceable rechargeable batteries, and the ability to machine-wash some components.

Editor’s note: Interviews with Paulin, M.D. and Ph.D. sources from York University, app previews and photos are available upon request.

About Thin Ice

Thin Ice was created by personal trainer and former NCAA Athlete Adam Paulin, who studied neuroscience and psychology at the University of Toronto. Paulin noticed that the biggest factor stopping people from sticking to an effective weight-loss regime was convenience. Paulin began to wonder if there was a way to accelerate his clients’ results without them needing to put in additional effort and time exercising.

This led him to ask the question: “How can we ‘hack’ our bodies’ metabolism into optimal performance using science?”

One known way to passively stimulate weight loss is through cold temperatures, which activate the body’s fat-burning brown fat (BAT) pathways. Paulin reasoned that there had to be a way to use this effect other than suffering through 20 minutes in an ice bath. After inventing a rudimentary “first-draft” of Thin Ice, Paulin assembled a team of engineers and researchers and the idea for Thin Ice 2.0 wearable cooling vest materialized. After launching a successful initial round of crowdfunding in 2015 to create an initial prototype of Thin Ice, the team is launching a second round of funding to improve upon the original design in the new, 2.0 version, expected to start shipping to backers by December of 2016.

In addition, Thin Ice is committed to the charitable cause of ending world hunger, and is donating a portion of all funds raised to give starving children around the world the nourishment they need.
