Leica’s new X-U action camera makes your GoPro look like a child’s toy

Lecia makes some of the most visually appealing products on the market today. From its military-inspired cameras to those ultra-sexy binoculars, you know each release is going to be a show-stopper. Today, Leica has released a new rugged and waterproof camera that still manages to look great. While it technically fits in the same category as GoPro, don’t expect similar styling…or price. The Leica X-U is a whole different animal that blends design and functionality into a unique package.

While Leica has pumped out plenty of gorgeous products, the brand hasn’t exactly been synonymous with durability. Not because of poor build-quality, but rather the internals are so precisely built that a tumble to the ground might be fatal. The X-U is built from the familiar mold of the recently released M Series. There is a 3-inch display on the rear but no viewfinder. Of course, the notable feature here is the waterproof design to 15 meters or 49 feet for up to 60 minutes. Leica has built the flash and an underwater protection filter for “pin-sharp pictures with perfect resolution.”

The camera is wrapped in a black sealed body that in addition to being waterproof, has been winterized for operations in colder temperatures plus it is shockproof. If you’re a true wilderness photographer, these details will be key. Just as important is the 16.5MP APS-C sensor and fixed 23mm lens with a quick f/1.7 aperture.

Videographers will be able to capture full resolution 1080p HD video at 30fps. The frame rate is a little bit disappointing at this price point, but the the difference in the optics between the X-U other consumer action cameras should help in this area. All the standard ISO, shooting mode and power buttons can be found in the typical spot on top.

At $3,000, the Leica X-U doesn’t have the same impulse-buy quality as some of GoPro’s offerings. But there is also a need in the market for a higher-quality action camera. Sure, GoPro is the consumer standard, but for those with the need (and wallet) for a camera with improved optics should take a look here. Leica’s latest release is available for purchase today from authorized retailers.
