It’s not easy to come up with a new headphone design. The whole gamut has pretty much been explored, making it more difficult to stand out from the pack. Instead of focusing on luxury, one company is going the opposite direction. The new Good Smile THP-01 headphones are unique blend of design and function. Think Transformers meets Bose.
Good Smile has collaborated with DJ Joe Hahn of Linkin Park fame under the “Toon Workshop” to crank out one of the cooler headphones we’ve seen in a while. You have to see the video to fully understand…

Good Smile is best known for its place in the toy world. Its background in plastics is clearly evident with the THP-01’s. The headphones can be collapsed into a compact form-factor that is a fraction of its expanded size. While collapsable headphones aren’t a new phenomenon, most models don’t look like this.
The boxy shape and clickity-clack movement combines a cool retro feel with high-end technology. Good Smile uses 256 sculpted pieces to put these cans together, most of which serve a function or move. Metal joints hold the many joints together and large over-ear cushions surround your head while blocking out surrounding noise.
It would surprise me to see these become a collector’s item of sorts. As the video shows, the bulky designs open the door to some interesting customization opportunities. The THP-01 headphones are now available directly from Good Smile for ¥45,000 or roughly $349. A Knights of Cydonia models in white and gray are expected to drop next month for an up-charge.
