Just in time for the holiday season, GoPro is rounding out its line-up of action cameras by adding a lower cost alternative today. The new HERO+ positions itself between the $129.99 entry-level model and the $299.99 LCD camera that was released back in June. This move sets the $199.99 GoPro HERO+ squarely in the mix for consumer’s attention across all ability and interest levels. Head below for more details.

GoPro has opted to blend the two previously mentioned cameras in shaping this new model. It has taken the housing from the lower cost HERO and melded it with the HERO+ LCD’s internals. This Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled camera allows users to communicate wirelessly between the device and your smartphone or GoPro’s Smart Remote. There is not a color LCD display on this model, so the ability to setup shots with the GoPro app is key.
The technical specifications for this model fall right where we’d expect a mid-range action camera to settle. GoPro’s HERO+ is capable of recording 1080p 60fps full HD, which is a jump up from the HERO that can only handle 30fps. Still photographers will be able to capture 8MP images but there is no functionality for slow-motion footage. The HERO+ has a built-in waterproof housing that will provide protection up to 131 feet. Of course, the entire line-up of GoPro accessories will be compatible with this new model.
GoPro’s move to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to the sub-$200 action camera market is a notable one. We recently reviewed the Monoprice MHD 2.0 Action Camera that has an identical price point and the same wireless connectivity. It has many similar features plus a live action wearable that allows users to frame shots and control recording settings from their wrist. GoPro is the most recognized name in the world of action cameras, so we’d expect many consumers to jump on this new model when it is released on October 4th.
Additionally, the GoPro HERO4 Session received an official price drop today down to $299.99 (Orig. $400). This is not a suprise, as the compact camera has been a recipient to multiple price drops in the last few weeks. The HERO4 Session has always been a tough sell at $399.99, given the feature set of the identically priced HERO4 Silver camera that includes a built-in color LCD display. Amazon currently offers a free $40 gift card with the purchase of a $299.99 HERO4 Session, while Best Buy is throwing in a free GoPro Smart remote.
We also have deals on GoPro’s HERO4 Black and the HERO4+ LCD action camera as well.
