Minecraft is set to hit the Oculus Rift VR headset this spring

Today at Oculus Connect 2, Founder and CEO Palmer Luckey announced that the Windows 10 version of Minecraft would be compatible with the upcoming Oculus Rift Headset. While details are somewhat sparse at the moment, you’ll find everything we know so far.

Minecraft HoloLens Demonstration at E3

Today’s news is particularly notable as Microsoft announced back at E3 that Minecraft would be coming to its own HoloLens hardware. Microsoft pledged support for both Oculus and Vive’s VR hardware in recent months, so it’s no surprise the popular game is making its way to the Rift platform. Regardless, this brings another layer of interest to Mojang’s huge hit.

The Oculus Rift 2 does not yet have a solid release date yet, but is expected to ship some time in Q1 of 2016. It will bring handheld interaction to virtual reality and will likely have a $500+ price tag. Pre-orders have yet to launch for the new VR hardware but it is expected to be one of the most popular releases in industry history. Once the new VR kit ships, Minecraft will be made available in the Oculus store.

Minecraft hit Windows 10 back in July when the operating system was released. This is just the latest in a string of big announcements for Mojang. The upcoming Minecraft: Story Mode is set to reinvigorate the franchise with pre-orders launching earlier this month.
