Admittedly, caviar is a food that I’ve only seen in the movies and on TV. Despite my lack of fine food experience, I can still respect those that enjoy this fishy treat. A new Kickstarter project might just bring the caviar experience to my humble midwest roots by way of a nifty little tool that can turn nearly anything into those small little orbs of flavor.
Meet the Imperial Spherificator – some name huh? – an all-in-one solution to turn your favorite sweets, vegetables, drinks and more into fun miniature spheres. With about three weeks left, the Imperial is close to meeting its goal…
These small caviar shaped garnishes are easily created by a simple process that blends food, sodium alginate and a calcium/water mixture to create a coating around the food. The thin membrane ensconces the liquid to seal in the flavor. It’s a process that can be done with most any kind of food, notably dairy products which makes those little Dippin Dots ice cream treats.
The Imperial Spherificator looks like one of those Contigo Coffee Thermoses. Instead of relying on a chemical bath and your inner-Albert Einstein, you simply put the necessary ingredients into the Spherificator and it does the rest for you. Some examples include condiments like tabasco sauce and ketchup or dessert toppings like chocolate or root beer. The options really do seem to be endless.
With 22 days remaining, this campaign has $58,000 of its $62,000 goal. A pledge of $150 will deliver an Imperial Spherificator come November, just in time for those holiday parties. There are also plenty of spherification kits on Amazon for purchase if you’re interested in learning more about this culinary delight.
