Review: Toffee’s Fitzroy Satchel is a solid gift for thoughtful commuters

When it comes to hauling around all your gear, bag designs are nearly limitless, spanning a wide range of designs for different tastes. One of my favorite parts of “working” for gadgetnewsonline is checking out all of the latest gear and accessories that are out there. Today we’re looking at an Australian bag that combines design and function effectively enough to make you really think about what you want to bring to the coffee shop. Let’s take a look at the Fitzroy Satchel from Toffee.

The details are really what counts with the Fitzroy Satchel; clearly, Toffee has paid a lot of attention to the materials. The durable waxed canvas exterior is available in black or green, while leather straps and metal buckles provide a stark contrast. Minimalist design is the theme, as very little is wasted on the outside of the bag: if it’s not necessary to some specific purpose, you won’t find it.

On the back of the bag, you’ll find a slot to hold your smartphone, which we tested with an iPhone 6 and a slim bumper case. There is just enough space to comfortably retrieve your device without feeling like there is too much effort involved. Our iPhone 6 slid all the way into the sleeve, which provided a complete shield from the outside world, while the 6 Plus comes in at 4/10″ wider than its slimmer counter-part, making it an unlikely fit for this storage compartment.

Flipping the lid on this bag reveals compartments for a laptop, tablet and additional storage for accessories. You don’t have to worry about losing anything in the bottom of this bag, however, as its slim design will adequately hold your MacBook Air charger and headphones but not much else. Initially, I was slightly put off by this, but the more time I spent with it, I really came to appreciate focusing on what was important. Did I really need to throw in a second wall charger? No.

The attention to detail inside is top notch, particularly the quilted stitching in the laptop compartment. Ultimately this area will rarely be seen, but it was a pleasant surprise to see such care taken in this area. The leather strap holds everything placed in the compartments. The bags are built to order based on the laptop you’ll be carrying around. Although I found the 13-inch model to be very snug on my MacBook Air, PC users with thicker machines may be out of luck in this regard. Toffee clearly states on its website that these are “Mac friendly products.”

The Fitzroy Satchel from Toffee starts at $130 for the 11.4-inch model (currently on sale at Amazon for $90), while the 13-inch model we tested is $150 with the 15-inch comes in at $160. Although they are hand crafted in Australia, the full line of Toffee products are available here in the United States via Amazon. This particular bag from Toffee offers a stylish solution meant for users who are thoughtful about what they are carrying on a daily basis. Its attention to detail makes it a great companion for a daily commuter who wants a little more style than the average bag.
